DressWhen packing, make sure that you have a selection of modest clothing, especially for the more rural areas and very busy cities where unwanted male attention is often common. Wearing local clothes is a good way to blend in leaving you to enjoy the sights free from harassment.
Unwanted Attention
Whether itís a street seller or never give out details of where you are staying or your travel plans. Always be polite but say no in a firm and friendly manner. Trust your gut instinct as it will usually lead you in the right direction. A smile can go a long way too.
![]() What to AvoidAvoid situations where you are the only female in a particular area. Donít walk along dark alleys and streets alone at night if you can help it and make sure you always know how to get back to your accommodation whether on foot or by rickshaw.
Keep an Eye OutWhen travelling alone it is important to take care of your backpack, it is, after all, your home away from home. Anytime you have to put it down make sure it is attached to you by a rope of some sort and ensure that you have mini padlocks on the zips as pickpockets are rife in the larger cities and you wonít necessarily be aware of someone rifling through your possessions. Be sure to keep your kit simple and not draw attention to yourself with any super fancy equipment or brand names.
Above AllÖ
Enjoy yourself! Be vigilant and take care of yourself and your possession but also take every opportunity to make the most of your experiences and make friends with your fellow travelers. There will be many other lone female travelers just waiting to share your adventures. Take a good book or a diary to write in as this will keep you busy when on long journeys or when eating out alone. Dont forget to take photos of all the stunning sights you'll see along the way!
